INTRODUCTION TO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY FOR CHILDREN, YOUNG PEOPLE AND FAMILIES

This hugely successful four-day course is aimed at occupational therapists working with children, those who are interested in a career move and return-to-work OTs.

The course is aimed at new graduates as well as those working in paediatrics (and other areas of OT) at band 5 or 6 level.

Course Content

Day One

  • Review of theoretical models, ICF, OTIPM

  • Review of Child Development

 

Day Two

  • Current best practice in assessment for a wide range of children with conditions such as ASD, CP, DCD, Developmental Delay, ADHD and the age range covered will be birth to school leaving age

  • Functional observations - practice and application

  • Goal setting and measuring outcomes

 

Days Three and Four

  • The latest evidence-based approaches relating to the four categories of interventions of the OPTIM

    • Restorative Occupation - exploring sensory strategies​

    • Educational Occupation - coaching approach

    • Compensatory Occupation - upper limb, equipment and assistive technology

    • Acquistional Occupation - goal-directed therapy, handwriting interventions, CO-OP and PREP

  • Writing reports and contributing towards EHCPs

  • Service delivery models

A variety of teaching methods are used including clinical videos, group work, case studies and lectures

This course covered a wide range of material and remained evidence based and person centred at all times. All presented material was relevant to the specific work area and was relatable. The lecturers were all clearly passionate, experienced and knowledgeable paediatric OT's and this shone through throughout. The materials which were made available to the learners were helpful to give further information about the topics we were covering.
